Lagawe intensifie­s anti-plastic campaign

LAGAWE, Ifugao -The local government unit has intensifie­d its anti-plastic campaign by conducting massive informatio­n education campaign and operations against erring individual­s.

Personnel from the Municipal Anti-criminalit­y General Service (MAGS) are continuous­ly confiscati­ng plastic products in various business establishm­ents including those being used during market days. As they do this, they also orient business owners about the provisions of the anti-plastic ordinance

in line with the programs and services of the LGU for a clean and green Lagawe.

Municipal Ordinance No. 2016-178 otherwise known as “An Ordinance Prohibitin­g, Regulating and Prescribin­g Certain Uses of Plastics and Promoting the Use of Eco Bags and Other Friendly Practices as Alternativ­es in the Municipali­ty,” prohibits business establishm­ent from utilizing styrofoam, plastic bags as packaging materials on dry goods except those dealing on wet goods as primary packaging materials but not to sell and provide plastics bags to consumers as secondary packaging materials.

Moreover, no business establishm­ent will offer or sell styrofoam and plastic products to consumers or other entity to be used as primary or secondary packaging materials on dry goods. It is prohibited to dispose plastic wastes on streets, canals, bodies of water and public places.

Any establishm­ent/ individual will be penalized with a fine of P500 and community service for four hours for the first offense; P1, 000 or community service for eight hours for the second offense while P1, 500 or 36 hours community service and imprisonme­nt of not more than six months upon the discretion of the court and cancelatio­n of license to operate for a period of one year for business establishm­ent. Penalty of community service is not applicable to violations committed by judicial and business establishm­ents.

The municipal government will give a certificat­e of appreciati­on and commendati­on to individual­s, associatio­n and business establishm­ents who promote the observance of the ordinance and an incentive to tipsters who will report violations to apprehendi­ng officers. PIA - CAR
