GENERATION Y CAFÉ: FOR THE 90’S AND BEYOND

- BY MARIA ELENA CATAJAN

APRIL Mandylyn Asturias has taken a col lection of odds for the public to enjoy. Asturias opened Generation Y Café as a tribute to the 90`s, highlighted by her grandfather, Rodante Fajardo’s collection as the Baguio girl was inspired to relieve the generation she grew up in with perfect accents.

The café is filled with a collection of cassette tapes, vinyl records, floppy disks, posters of music icons and movie stars from the era, games like lego and the family computer attached to an old style television set [yes, it still works] with a selection of games you can choose from.

Each corner of the café will make any 90`s kid smile with a beeper displayed on one of the shelves, a Motorola phone, old film cameras and house landline telephones scattered all over.

There is also an iconic ‘Sari – Sari’ store at the café filled with small treats that will bring you back to your childhood, a board of plastic balloon is free for the taking as well as candies like mic mic, hao hao, ding dongs and other sweet treats free for the café diners.

Asturias warns there is no Wi-Fi access in the café.

“It’s not part of the services, since the café encourages its customers to chat and bond without the need of smartphones and gadgets, just like the old times. Our customers will never get bored, as the café will allow them to experience some of the games and activities during the ‘90s,” Asturias added.

The area, looks like a comfortable family ‘sala’ with board games, childhood pastimes like sipa and trumpo and reading materials like komiks, Archie, Pugad Baboy and song hits. Old edition magazines are also free for in house reading.

Generation Y Café offers sandwiches, pasta, appetizers, desserts, rice meals, and pastries in a unique menu styled like a 90`s slum book and are named after the ‘90s games, songs, and activities making one laugh and smile.

Asturias recommends house specialties of beef caldereta and spicy salted egg shrimp as well as the selection of coffee blends.

Food choices like Hilaang Lubid (Pasta and Pancit), Carb Otso - otso Nara, Xtasi-Xtuna, Spaghetti Pababa at Pataas,” and Macre –Nara Meatballs are served.

For the sandwich selection, a serving of ‘Pag Binato ka ng bato, batuhin mo ng Tinapay,’ ‘98 Degrilled chicken,’ ‘the Boyz II Na,’ and the ‘Backcheese Boys and Spam,’ are in the offing.

Desserts are labeled “Sweet Sexy Thing” with choices like “Bananas in pajamas ala mode,” “Princess Ice Scramble” and “Ice Cedie”

A selection of rice meals like the ‘Chicken Curry geddon,” The Fried of Chucky,” “The Mask Of Beef Zorro,” “Beef Sister Nilag Act,” and the “Tinapatanic.”

Appetizers include “Ang Huling El Besuto,” “Maling Akalang KCF,” “Chicken Ligaya,” and “With a Sili,” an all-day breakfast selection also includes; “Luksong Tapa,” “Pikorned Beef” and ‘Langit Longga.”

The entire place will make you stop and think about your childhood and introduce the era to millennials sans the use the internet, the café is located at the 3rd Floor of Leonard Wood Terraces, Leonard Wood Road and is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
