What is the ideal K-12 teacher?

- Carmelita B. Sad-ang

THE K-12 Basic Education Program aims to provide every Filipino child with the education she/he needs to compete in a global context… The goal of the new Curriculum is to give Filipino students enough time to master skills and concepts so that they are ready for tertiary education when the time comes.

Therefore, what is the ideal K-12 teacher?

The teacher is a facilitator and guide.

In the democratic setting, the teacher serves as facilitator and guide in developing learner’s values, attitudes, and decisions. As such, she does not monopolize asking questions, but solicits and encourages learners to ask questions. She enables learners to become active constructors of knowledge and not mere passive recipients of information.

The teacher employs Cooperative Learning activities.

The human mind has a tremendous potential and capability in developing critical, reflective, and creative thinking. The teacher therefore, provide activities that exercise and develop learners’ thinking powers.

The teacher is committed, dedicated, and daring.

No matter how talented, knowledgeable, and capable a teacher is, if she/he is not committed, dedicated, and is not bold enough to dare for change, success will never be attained.

The teacher is childfriendly.

In the process of developing the learners’ thinking values, the teacher is confronted with learners who refuse to get involved because they are shythey lack confidence, they lack language facility, or they find learning a highly threatening experience. Here, the teacher is dealing with feelings that are bound to affect learning, for how one feels influences how and what one does. In view of this, the teacher should cultivate child-friendly relations, motivations, and reactions.
