Increasing participation

- Andrea D. Magcelo

A LEARNING process that involves active participation of learners results to productive and satisfying development of learners. Participation of the class is really important to assess if the student understand the lesson and helps them enhance their own understanding of the lesson.

So, it is important to help our learners to take responsibility of their own learning because they have the primarily control of their own success. Teacher then will be a facilitator of learning.

The primary step to increase participation is to build trust to our learners. Knowing their strengths and their weaknesses will be of great help. Start on what they know and not on what they don’t know. Make the task more interesting and within the level of their understanding. Because they learn better when they feel that they are personally involved in learning.

Next, involve collaboration. Learning is not just between the teacher and the student but also the whole classroom experience. Group the class into three, four and so on so that they learn from each other. By sharing their ideas they feel a personal reward.

Finally, give appropriate feedback and must be immediate, frequent, enthusiastic, varied and should involve eye contact. Praises boost learner’s confidence and probable they will likely to repeat their effort and behavior.
