Separate STP for Slaughterhouse Compound pushed
THE CITY Veterinary Office (CVO) head by Dr. Brigit Piok expressed hopes the bidding for the establishment of a separate sewage treatment plant (STP) at the Slaughterhouse Compound will be done by the end of the year.
Dr. Silardo Bested of the CVO said a separate STP at Slaughterhouse Compound is aimed at treating the liquid waste of the city abattoir in order to decongest the liquid waste going to the city’s STP.
Bested explained that at present, the liquid waste coming from the Slaughterhouse Compound is connected to the main city STP.
The CVO has also inspected and passed for slaughter more than 200 thousand heads of animals including hogs, cattle, goats, carabaos and chicken from January 1 to July 31, this year.
City veterinarian Piok said the slaughtered animals produced more than 5,800 tons of meat that was inspected by her office and approved for human consumption during the period.
Her office also inspected and approved for human consumption more than 6,300 tons of fish during the same time frame.
She revealed that on antemortem inspection, six heads of hogs including more than 17 tons of animal internal organs inspected by the CAVO were found to be unfit for human consumption so these meat products were condemned, confiscated and buried.
Piok said more than 8,000 tons of meat coming from outside the city were inspected and approved for food while 623 kilos of meat were found to be unfit for human consumption and were condemned, confiscated and buried.
