ENDING the month of August with flowers, Benguet State University (BSU) spear headed by the Horticulture Research and Training Institute (HORTI) conducted a training on formal and informal flower arrangement, terrarium making and stakeholders’ consultation on ornamentals at the Chrysanthemum Hall, Research & Extension Building, Km.5, La Trinidad, Benguet last August 30-31, 2018. The two-day training and consultation employed a demo-lecture type presenting flower arrangement definition, floral designs, guidelines and principles, and color combinations on the first day while terrarium-making and dish gardening on the second day. During the demonstration, resource speaker Ms. Alma A. Amado and hands-on trainer Mr. Tember T. Benwasen, sampled a formal and freestyle flower arrangements that are commonly used in different occasions. This was followed by the participants’ hands-on workshop where they came up with the following nine flower arrangements as their output: mountain maidens, natural, crescent moon barako, and fragrance in the freestyle category and gladiola in bloom, remember me, one direction aims, a year round astromeria and second chances in the formal category. These were then critiqued by the trainors after the presentations and the winning flower arrangement were awarded before the closing remarks.

Terrarium making and dish gardening followed immediately after the workshop on flower arrangement. Mr. Benwasen demonstrated on terrarium making while Ms. Amado did the dish gardening. Terrarium and dish garden can be done in forest or desert setting.

The second day started with a brief review of flower arrangement and terrarium making. The participants were filled with excitement as they brought with them different sizes of bottles, plants and pebbles for the day’s activity. The workshop for terrarium making and dish gardening were done individually and participants chose their own setting.

The feedbacks from the participants were mostly positive adding to bouquets of flowers.
