Vegetable farm gate prices increase

WITH lesser production during the first quarter of 2018 compared to the same period in 2017, majority of the price of leafy vegetables in the whole Cordillera region increased.

Philippine­s Statistics Authority-Cordillera said from P17.24 during the first quarter of 2017, farm gate prices vegetables increased to P19.40 in the same period this year.

Farm gate price refers to the price received by farmers in selling their produce at the first point of sale.

Yellow corn increased from P11.92 to P12.75 per kilogram while broccoli increased from P15.59 to P42.62, cabbage from P15.26 to P19.39, cauliflowe­r from P11.63 to P42.62, lettuce from P11.81 to P61.22, chinese pechay from P6.51 to P15.59 and pechay native from P24.74 to P30.98 per kilo.

Other vegetables such as ampalaya also increased from P25.18 to P32.26, chayote from P4.41 to P6.99, squash from P17.40 to P22.57 and tomato from P15.79 to P19.70 per kilo.

Eggplant, on the other hand, decrease from P21.83 to P21.06.

Average farm prices of beans and legumes went up from P18.61 to P25.04, string beans from P23.99 to P26.92 and sweat peas, and Baguio beans from P53.04 to P80.91.

In the first quarter of 2018, prices of ginger native went down while prices of onion leaks went up from P27.71 to P36.15 and bell pepper from P50.85 to P52.49.

Prices of roots crops and tubers meanwhile went down with carrots from P34.43 to P25.57, sweet potato from P27.37 to P19.88 and cassava fresh tubers from P16.05 to P10.74 per kilo.

Farm gate price of celery also went down from P31.36 to P23.03.

For livestock and poultry, prices of cattle also went up with P112.85 to P118.55, carabao P103.32 to P106.21, hogs with P103.75 to P117.36, goat P100.24 to P103.96, native chicken P134.66 to P144.15 and duck with P130.75 to P139.01 per kilo.

Farm Prices Survey, a nationwide household-based monthly survey is designed to gather data on farmgate prices received by farmers, livestock and poultry raisers for the sale of their produce.

PSA-CAR said the survey is essential in the formulatio­n of economic program, government policies, production planning and decision making to optimize profit.
