A teacher’s tale

- Racquel L. Manuel

SHAPING up little minds is not an easy task. The development of the child’s mind is dependent on the things around him/her. They grasp lessons, ideas and thoughts with the provision of a good learning environment. To provide this would mean varied learning opportunities and activities to further develop the child as a whole. A child’s mind is likened to a sponge which allows them to easily grasp lessons and concepts presented.

It has been said that a child is able to learn best when their senses are being used. When they are able to see, hear, feel and touch a concept, they are able to better understand it. When they do, it stays with them for a lifetime.

It would take an extraordinary person to accept the responsibility and the task to shape a child’s mind into its fullest potential.

This where a teacher comes into picture.

Extraordinary, great, noblest, however a teacher is described; a teacher will always have a role to play in the life of a student because he sees each child as a potential, somebody who can be great and able to make a difference in the world.

Teachers love the learners more than the lesson. They strive and make sure that each day is a day of learning, patiently and lovingly guiding every young mind placed under their wings.

Teachers make learning an avenue of expression of the learners’ own ideas and thoughts. They allow learners to make mistakes using it as a tool for them to learn from. New ideas are welcomed without hesitations and opportunities are provided for the students to discover new learning experiences.

Teachers do not choose but rather help everyone; giving equal treatment, affection and care to all his learners despite their differences. A slow learner over a fast learner, a passive learner over an active learner and the list of differences goes on.

Teachers can be a parent, a friend, a counselor and more because they willingly take different roles in the life of a learner.

As what Uncle Ben in the movie Spiderman said, great power comes with great responsibility; teachers are powerful that they can effect and affect change in an individual. Their contribution in the society will never be matched with a salary grade. Appreciating their efforts, giving value to their work are encouragement for them to do more, to go more the extra, extra mile.

Teachers are not to be underestimated or overestimated, all they want is to make sure that the hope of the land do not go astray.

And as teachers are given all the pampering they deserve even just for a day, may they continue to be noble, humble and able to light a candle in every end of a tunnel.
