The scientist that never was (Part I)

THE automatic door lock outdone other en tries from regional to national level and had even received considerable cash prices. As for the entry that promises to reduce petroleum consumption - it soon died a natural death. I cannot comprehend how the science academes select judges, why at times, judgement was a result of fad, ignorance or simply senseless judgement. Not, that I dislike automatic door locks but I despise the viability. An entry-level student in electronics using the same concept can also make an automatic window or roof lock.

Further, anyone can pay telecom companies today for less than a hundred peso just to install cameras and watch over events happening at home. So what is the use of installing an automatic door lock?

In contrast, an entry that will reduce petroleum consumption is directly viable because of its impact in lessening human’s dependent on non-renewable fuel. Besides, student threading in this area of expertise, whether the entry failed or succeeded, will understand the concepts of engines, motors, gears and several mechanical principles that may lead to unlimited applications. Entries in life sciences that will ensure food security must be considered also such as in vitro or tissue culture and similar technologies that fast track the growth of edible plants; reduce our dependence on inorganic matters and protects water and soil. These are the promising fields towards economic development. Why can we not thread on these? The answer is on this story. From the thousand applicants’ worldwide, three scientists: a Russian, American and Filipino were backing their bid to a Science director concerning who will operate a one-way spacecraft. Destined for a time travel towards the future, the job needs two pilots only. It is a new technology; hence, the probability of returning alive is only one per cent. From the bid, the Russian ask one million dollars to bequest relatives in case of death. The American asks one million also, aimed for charity. Before submitting a bid, the Filipino cleverly inquired the science director how much the Russian and American is asking. The Science director replied, both are asking one million. In a moment, the Filipino calculated and submitted a four million bid. The science director was sur-
