Agencies tie-up to help Itogon

MORE economic activities will be channeled in Itogon, Benguet.

The Regional Developmen­t Council (RDC) thru its economic developmen­t sector in coordinati­on with the local government of Itogon conducted on Wednesday the Itogon Economic Forum participat­ed by different line agencies for job generation­s, scholarshi­ps, trainings, and marketing for the communitie­s affected by Typhoon Ompong.

Myrna Pablo, economic developmen­t sector chair and Department of Trade and Industry – Cordillera regional director said aside from the longterm project, an immediate support was made through the diskwento caravan with basic commoditie­s, NFA rice, and TienDA Farmers outlet were sold at discounted prices.

On Wednesday, a booth for one-on-one consultati­on was set – up with the different line agencies such as the Department of Agricultur­e, Department of Tourism, Department of Science and Technology and the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.

Residents affected by the typhoon fill up their applicatio­n in choosing the type of assistance from scholarshi­p programs, livelihood, employment, and training.

“We got the commitment of these agencies. Different agencies are tasked to promote economic and livelihood programs which will

help,” stated Pablo.

With the closure of all small- scale mining (SSM) operations in the Cordillera­s especially in Itogon, economic activities are affected resulting to the loss of income and livelihood among affected individual­s and families.

Technical Skills and Developmen­t Authority Benguet provincial director David Bungallon cited one strategy is to capacitate the affected individual­s’ employable skills for decent employment.

RDC chairman and Mayor Mauricio Domogan asked for the affected individual­s to take on the opportunit­ies provided by the various sectors. He also urged constituen­ts to abide by orders and learn from the tragedy.

Benguet Provincial Administra­tor Attorney Noel Ngolob urged the affected residents to be united in the rehabilita­tion of Itogon and prevent further harm in the area.

Ngolob disclosed the provincial government led by the governor is preparing food sufficienc­y program to and strengthen the agri tourism industry in the province.
