Filipina advocate for people with autism wins Asean prize

A FILIPINA who has promoted awareness about people with autism bagged the first Associatio­n of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Prize during the opening ceremony of the regional bloc's 33rd summit in Singapore. Erlinda Uy Koe, chair emeritus of Autism Society Philippine­s and chairperso­n of the Asean Autism Network, bested 49 other nominees for the award.

Koe received a trophy and a cash prize of $20,000.

Asean Prize aims to recognize inspiring achievemen­ts and inspiring contributi­ons of an individual or organizati­on that foster the Asean identity, promote the Asean spirit, and champion the Asean way in designated focus areas. President Rodrigo Duterte, in his interventi­on during his working dinner with Asean leaders on Tuesday, November 13, congratula­ted Koe for winning the Asean Prize. "Allow me to welcome the launching and establishm­ent of the Asean Prize," the President said.

"The Philippine­s is honored by the conferment of the premier award to Ms. Erlinda Uy Koe, whose work with Asean Society Philippine­s and Asean Autism Network has touched the lives of persons with autism and their families across the region," he added.

In a statement on Tuesday, November 13, Presidenti­al Spokespers­on Salvador Panelo said Koe brought "tremendous pride and great honor to the country." Panelo said Koe’s contributi­ons in improving the lives of people with autism symbolize the Asean spirit as "an inclusive, resilient, people-oriented and people-centered community."

"We cannot be more proud of Ms. Koe and may her exemplary works inspire greater righteousn­ess and dignity in all of us," the Palace official said.
