Take a step

- Claydee Acong

EVERY opportunity in life begins with a single goal that a person has in mind. As for our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, I believe his that goal was to educate the people and to guide them into standing up with their two feet independently. He once said that the youth is our nation’s future. With those two ideas that some people look up to now, I have found myself in a position in which I, too, can help an individual take a step.

As what was said, every opportunity in life begins with a single goal that a person has in mind. This may lead a person into making decisions, then into strategizing the things they need to do, then into converting those into actions, then into continuing such actions to attain success. In a simpler term, every opportunity starts when you take a step.

In school, each child or student is given an equal opportunity to absorb as many knowledge as they can. However, not every child chooses to gain a lot more learning – not every child chooses to have their knowledge be taken up a notch. As an adult and a guiding figure inside a room filled with children who aren’t yet fully equipped with the knowledge they will need to face the world, I believe one of the reasons why some students aren’t choosing to be indulged in their studies is the fact that there is a lack of motivation. A possible reason as to why students study and learn less than others is because they aren’t motivated to do their best or to do things in the areas where they are the best at.

I believe that although students are given an equal opportunity to learn from their classroom lessons, not every child is the same in terms of the way he/she learns and the things he/she is good at. Some students may excel in English but not in Math. Some may be great in drawing but do not play sports. Some may be the best singer in the group but does not perform well dancing. Some may achieve the highest scores during a quiz but has the lowest confidence when it comes to class participation and reporting. Some may be the visual learners who learn through pictures and visual aids while some may be auditory learners or even kinesthetic.

Truth is, students really differ from one another. However, what I want to do is to motivate them – to help them see what they are capable of. I want to be the teacher that teaches them not only bookbounded lessons but also the lessons they need to have in order to enhance their gifts. Sometimes, students know what they can do but they do not really know what greater things they are capable of. Through motivation and encouragement, I want them to see their opportunities and capabilities as a way to keep them closer to their goals. And through this, I am certain that, little by little, I am helping them take a step that would someday turn into a leap or maybe into a jump that would make them be the person they have always dream of being.

Seeing how students improve in particular areas of their life enable them to see their potentials and possibly help them be more motivated to do well in school. Knowing that they are starting to take a step makes me realize the value of the opportunities each of us have in this world full of possibilities. As the saying goes, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Who knows, maybe my step of helping them take a step would give this world great doctors, intelligent scientists, astonishing engineers, talented performers and more in the future. More so, I could be molding the future bright leaders this country will have all because of taking a step.
