Magalong okays Ayala waste study

BAGUIO City Mayor Benjamin Magalong has given his green light for the Ayala group to conduct studies for the waste to energy projects.

Last week, projects for water and waste were proposed by the Ayala group for the city by Manila Water Philippine Ventures, a subsidiary of the Ayala group has proposed a bulk water project for the city with the Baguio water district as well as a waste to energy project to become a permanent solution for Baguio’s garbage woes.

With the permission from Magalong, the city council will be asked to approve the move to sign an agreement with the company to do initial waste profiling.

The Ayala group aims to provide integrate waste management solutions for the garbage problem as well as expanded water supply coverages from 3.1 Million customers to 7 Million for the bulk water.

Manila Water Philippine Ventures, a subsidiary of Manila Water and Ayala Corporation, disclosed the proposed sites for BWD’S bulk water project are located in Itogon and Tuba, Benguet.

Based on the presentation of the company to city officials during the recently concluded executive-legislative meeting, the identified source in Itogon town is capable of producing some 62 million liters per day of potable water while the Budacao spring in Tuba can only produce some 9 million liters per day.

For over two decades now, BWD has been attempting to venture on a bulk water project with private proponents but the same has not yet been realized because of the difficulty in finding a sustainable source of potable water for the city from the neighboring areas and the acceptance of the host communities over the said project.
