Scouting builds students to be more responsible
AS scouting month nears, every students are encouraged to join the Boys Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) as well as the Girls Scouts of the Philippines (GSP) in all schools throughout the country. Students regardless of their religious beliefs and culture and ethnicity provided they are fit and interested are always welcome to be enlisted in the scouting movement.
As provided by the Philippine law under Republic Act 7278 – the amended Commonwealth Act 111 – the BSP's main trust is “to promote the ability of boys to do useful things for themselves and others, to train them in scout craft and to inculcate in them patriotism, civic consciousness and responsibility, courage, self-reliance, discipline and kindred. For girls, also under the law, the State recognizes the vital role of the youth in nation building. To this end, the State affirms the contribution of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines
to the promotion of positive values, responsible citizenship and volunteerism to young women through its faithful adherence to the fundamental principles of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, an internationally recognized organization.
Many if not all parents manifest that their children earned more self-esteem and confidence because of scouting. As the students are having fun, they are being trained to be more responsible, self-dependent and a deeper understanding of having good relationship with the other scouts and the community they are in.
In its official website, the BSP stated that development of students joining the scout movement is a result of first-hand experience as opposed to theoretical instructions. Scoutor ing teaches the students on how to practically look for remedies and life skills.
There are many students who are scouts who were taught of community leadership and many of them have served their local governments as "Scout officials for a day" or Scofad. They will carry such attitude of responsibility all throughout their lives.
The only thing that should be realized is that scouting in schools is somewhat voluntary as those who are enthusiastic and interested are the ones joining. It is yet to be integrated with the education curriculum.
Once integrated, every boys and girls enrolled will have the opportunity to be in the scouting movement and enjoy the benefits scouting offers. More and more students will be further developed as leaders in the future. Christmas tree lighting event for the benefit of the AHF.
