Benguet helps Apayao

VEGETABLE stakeholde­rs from Benguet are aiding fellow Cordillera­n’s hit by typhoons.

Close to six tons of Benguet highland vegetables were donated to Apayao province affected by typhoons Ramon and Sarah.

Augusta Balanoy of the League of Associatio­ns said the donation is part of their yearly outreach program that usually coincides with the annual Christmas party of

the La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post, with members deciding to aid their brothers and sisters in Apayao that was affected by past typhoons.

Assorted vegetables like potatoes, carrots, wombok, cabbage, zucchini, cauliflowe­r, tomatoes, and non-vegetables such as clothes, hygienic rice and more than P20,000 cash to purchase rice donated by members of League of Associatio­ns in Benguet capital town of La Trinidad.

The load of vegetables was sent Monday in coordinati­on with La Trinidad Municipal Police Station, Benguet Provincial Police Office, Police Regional Office Cordillera and Department of Public Works and Highways in the region.

Police Major Roldan Cabatan, La Trinidad chief of police said the vegetables reached the province early morning of Tuesday, December 3 and was turned over to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) of Apayao in charge to take the donation to beneficiar­ies.

Previously, Apayao was placed under State of Calamity last month through a resolution of Sanggunian­g Panlalawig­an of Apayao following two deaths recorded. The League of Associatio­ns of La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post composed of more than 10 associatio­ns including different stakeholde­rs from the vegetable industry.

It is one of the biggest vegetable trading area in the Benguet town together with Benguet AgriPinoy Trading Center all found in La Trinidad that provides vegetables to different markets in Manila and different parts of the country.
