Cop admits vehicles evading checkpoints

- By PJ Orias

Some vehicles entering the city have been able to evade police-manned checkpoints, an official of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) admitted yesterday.

Chief Inspector Mardy Hortillosa, Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) said the Kinasanghan, Opol town and Westbound checkpoints manned by the Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB) are the ones which are usually evaded checkpoints.

Instead of waiting for their turn in the long line of vehicles on national highways, some CDO-bound vehicles are taking the diversion road in Igpit, Opol, turn right at Barra, Opol access road, and then turn left towards the city proper.

A resident said some are proceeding and entering the Vamenta Subdivision, in Barra, Opol.

Hortillosa said they find it difficult to guard the diversion road as this area is not under the area of responsibility of the Cocpo.

“This area is covered by Opol, so we cannot control the area. So as of now, we are still studying kung unsa ang maayo ani buhaton,” he said.

“Our best option is to coordinate with the Opol police but we know also their limitation,” Hortillosa said, referring to the lack of manpower of the said police station.

To address this however, some policemen are deployed in the said areas as of this writing, as authorities are still looking for long-term solutions.

Meanwhile, Hortillosa said there are still no recorded groups of suspicious people held by authorities due to security threats.

“So far, what we have held are people nga kadtong walay lisensya, walay rehistro ang vehicles, mga ingon ani pa, nothing in particular nga reported gyud nga suspicious. When we conduct also checkpoints, strategic man siya, dili man tanan gyud atong I-question, labina kung for instance, dili couple sila unya naay anak, things like that,” Hortillosa said.
