Jashel, Desmark quarter favorites

- By JAIME A. FRIAS II

TITLE favorites Jashel Trucking and Desmark Corporation will have a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinal round of the 7th Hazzard Ballers Association Inter-Company Basketball Friendship Games here.

Starting tonight, Jashel battles with Climbs Insurance at 8:30 p.m., followed by Desmark Corporation’s tussle with Philtyres Corporation at NHA covered courts in brgy. Kauswagan.

Jashel finished the elimination round with a clean slate, 11-0 to claim the first spot in the quarterfinals with Desmark at 10-1.

Climbs clinched the last ticket to the quarterfinals after edging Toyota Motors and LF Logistics in the tiebreaker among three teams with similar 4-7 win-loss record.

Philtyres notched the seventh place in the elimination round with a 5-6 ledger to test the might of Desmark. CAGAYAN de Oro’s ten rookie fighters from the Mindanao Ultimate Mixed Martial Arts (MUMMA) gym made waves in the 2017 Muay Thai National Open 3rd leg on Sunday in Dumaguete City.

Instead of competing in the novice division, eight of the ten rookies decided to show wares instead in the advance division. A decision that makes their first ever out-of-town campaign memorable as five of them-Gianni Garrido, Russell Fabroa, Yncent Pol Kalaw Calibjo, Chaz Mayo and Jasper Ray Navarro--ended up winning a gold each in their respective weight categories.

Angelie Sabanal was Mumma’s lone female bet to win a gold in the 51 kgs women’s advance category.

Kirby Jay Pungtod and Paul Galope also salvaged a silver medal each in the men’s advance, while Katrina Limbaroc got a silver in the women’s advance.

Joshua Jude Paclar and Haresh Frederick Dela Serna had a bronze medal each in the novice division.

Meanwhile, two of MUMMA’s jiujitsu fighters won a gold and three silver medals in the 1st Caraga Brazilian Jiujitsu Gi and No-Gi Invitational 2017 last Saturday at Robinsons Place in Butuan City.

Joyce Vega led Mumma’s campaign with a pair of gold and silver medals in the 72 kgs women’s division, while Ely Fernandez bagged a couple of silvers in the 55 kgs men’s division.
