- By Alwen Saliring

Asix-wheeler truck loaded with canned goods and bound for Iligan City ran over and killed two people and injured another woman on board a motorcycle in at Zone 6, Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City, Monday dawn, July 26.

The two fatalities were identified as 21-year old motorcycle driver Jeromie Java, a resident of Macabalan village, and Jessa Joy Ortizo, 18 years old and a resident of Julio-Pacana street, this city.

Ortizo’s cousin Camille Ortizo, 22, was hurt and is undergoing medical treatment.

Police officer 3 (PO3) Melecio Bakiki, investigator of Police Station 7 in Bulua, said the motorcycle was traversing the highway going Bulua area when it collided with another motorcycle, causing it to crash on the path of the truck.

The victims were rushed to the JR Borja General Hospital where Java and the younger Ortizo were declared dead.

Bakiki said the truck driver, identified as Jaysondane Dayak, 36, submitted himself to the authorities.

“Basi sa driver nakita niya nga nakasagi na ang motor sa mga biktima sa laing motor ug siya nga naa sa likod naka break pero kay duol kaayo siya gisulayan niyag likay hinungdan nalatayan gyud ang duha,”Bakiki said.

“Pero pag adto nato sa area wala didto ang giingong motor nga nakasagi una sa motor sa mga biktima,”Bakiki added.

Bakiki said the victims and the truck driver were not under the influence of alcohol.

The police investigator added the victim’s family has waived to file charges against the truck driver and tried to settle the incident.

“Ang tagtungod nagsign og waiver nga dili sila manumbong sa pagkakaron ug posible makig-settle sila sa truck driver,”Bakiki said.

But, police said should both parties fail to settle and victims’ families would insist on the filing of the case, the truck driver would be charged with reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide and damage to property.

Bakiki said if no cases will be filed today, July 27, the police will release the truck driver.

“Kami willing mi nga mofile og kaso pero kung walay kaso ma-file karon, i-release namo ang driver,”Bakiki said.

Meanwhile, Lawyer Edgardo Uy, Task Force Hapsay Dalan chief, advised motorists to

drive defensively to avoid accidents.

Uy said drivers should also refrain from driving while under the influence of alcohol and avoid using cellphones and other gadgets while driving.

“Do not assume you have the right of way. Bisan malangan gamay ipa-una ang uban,”Uy said.

“When crossing the streets, even on pedestrian lanes, always assume the approaching driver has not seen you. It’s better to be late than injured, or worse, dead,”Uy added.

(The malnutrition rate in Misamis Oriental really went down that is why we should really work hard to give it more attention),” Barcenas said.

The seeds will be provided for free by the provincial government and will be distributed to all the barangays in Misamis Oriental. These will then be given to all households by the barangay nutrition scholars who will also orient them about household gardening.

“Kini atong gihimo to prove nga dili nato kinahanglan ug mugasto jud ta ug dako para maka-afford sa nutritional food. We just have to look sa gawas sa atong balay and naa na didto ang mga nutritious food. (We did this to prove that we do not have to spend much in order to afford nutritional food. We just have to look outside our houses and the nutritious foods are there),” Barcenas said.

The Provincial Nutrition Action Center will monitor the activities held by the barangay nutrition scholars in the whole province. The outstanding barangay nutrition scholar under this project will be awarded by the next Nutrition Month Celebration.
