Upholding respect and good values among learners

- By Vilma L. Lagsa

Upholding respect and good values among students is of utmost significance and importance; it is not only learnt at school, the fundamentals and basics of education and the growing years of teaching but the value of respect, good manners and good character are taught also. And as a public school teacher, it is of utmost thrust that we will be able to shape and mold our learners, our students to become good and responsible members of the community. For some, the notion of respect implies a courteous, decorous, civil, or deferential attitude. Here we use the term to refer to the experience of being taken seriously. Acting respectfully reflects appreciative feelings for another person or group. Respectful schools are, by definition, democratically informed learning environments where people feel safe, supported, engaged, and helpfully challenged. Respect doesn’t happen in isolation; it’s based in relationships. As we learn and teach, we are—or are not—respectful in the context of our social, emotional, civic, and intellectual interactions. A sustainable, positive school climate fosters But, how can we uphold respect and good values among students? Of course, we should set first as good examples, as good epitome of showing and exhibiting respect towards our fellow teachers, our fellow workers and even to everyone we meet along the way. Respect should not choose someone whom to respect, it should be freely and sincerely given, even to those who do not deserve it; but, let us always remember that everyone deserves respect, everyone. And, as teachers, we should as well respect our students. Of course, if we want to be respected, then we should respect and understand them first. Teachers stand as second parents to the students, so as teachers are expected to act and respond like the parents. Finally, as teachers, we should always be fair to our students. And let us always instill in them that good education comprises good character, good values and we should always be good to everyone we meet. Thus, we should, at all times, uphold respect and good values.
