Drug testing in Universities

- BY NEF LUCZON

Supposedly, if mandatory drug testing will be implemented in tertiary schools, especially those that are run by the State, what would happen to the students by then? Are there any concrete programs to offer and how are we guaranteed that this will be discreet and would not resort to publicly shaming the users? Will they be killed?

If there will be drug tests in schools, will that guarantee a reduction of drug dependents? Will that also identify, for those who test positive, the source of the illegal drugs they were consuming? Are there facilities enough to cater to the newly-discovered drug dependents? Are we expecting that young people in college are already exposed to illegal drugs, or at least there was an assumption of such?

What happens if the students refused? Are they still going to go to college? What if the students belong to a wealthy and influential family, can they get away with it by bribing or threatening authorities?

How effective the method of testing? Assuming that if it is going to be a mandatory, there would be thousands flocking in drug testing clinics. And speaking of drug testing clinics, will there be a form of accreditation from designated authorities? Will no this be another form of business venture to some? Especially so to government officials who like to engage in other business enterprises?

Or, will the government provide by adding more government-owned drug-testing centers in every region to accommodate the demand for the mandatory drug testing in tertiary schools? Will it be free of charge or the students will pay a particular fee? And if there are fees, will it be cheap or expensive?

Why just students? Why can’t also be faculty and staff? Although they underwent in drug-testing during the submission of employment requirements, what are the odds that after they got employed, they came to use illegal drugs after?

Most importantly, how do we know that the human rights of these drug dependents be protected and observed? Or not? Because they are drug addicts?

Some of the questions quite critical in raising possibilities for making prospective students undergo such a test. Debatable, as it is controversial.
