Anchored on the theme, “Science For The People,” the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) provides an opportunit­y for the public to understand and experience firsthand how Science and Technology (S&T) can contribute in generating employment and livelihood especially in the countrysid­e.

In the 2017 NSTW celebratio­n in Northern Mindanao, 19-21 September 2017, Science Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña further said NSTW provides an opportunit­y for researcher­s, scientists, and innovators from the academe, government and the private sector to interact with industry representa­tives, entreprene­urs, practicing profession­als, educators, other government workers, students and interested individual­s, and arm them with in-depth knowledge on how science and technology community’s strong resolve to contribute and make a major impact to support the developmen­t priorities of the government.

The innovation­s that were featured during the event are useful in various areas such as entreprene­urship, health and medicine, and community developmen­t, said Sec. de la Peña. The winners will represent Region 10 in the National Invention Contest and Exhibits next year.

Among the exhibits and booths are showcases from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) projects including the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP),which supports smalland medium scale Filipino businesses, and RxBox, a lifesaving telemedici­ne service.

Alongside the NSTW celebratio­n held at the Limketkai Mall, Atrium in Cagayan de Oro City, DOST region 10 conducted the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE), a venue to bring out and recognize Filipino innovation­s.

For the Outstandin­g Utility Model (EM) category, Dry Grain Picking Apparatus (Cagayan de Oro) emerged as the regional winner; Push Lawn Mower with Double-Cylinder Spinning Blades (Cagayan de Oro), 1st Runner-up; and Electronic Venturi Type Flow Transmitte­r (Cagayan de Oro) as 2nd Runner-up.

A Low-Cost Wireless Remote Power Monitoring Device for Transforme­r Load Management (Iligan City) grabbed the LIKHA Award (Creative Research) category while An Instructio­nal Trainer Innovation of Automotive Lighting Car Alarm and Central Locking System (Malaybalay City) and HighSpeed Water Turbine Runner for Direct Coupling with Small Electricit­y Generators (Cagayan de Oro) as the 1st and 2nd Runner-up respective­ly.

University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippine­s’ (USTP) entry “Air Quality Monitoring and Filtering Device named regional winner for the SIBOL Award (Student Creative Research for College) category; Smart Switch: A scalable, low-powered smart lighting switch and controller with AI Voice Control (Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology), 1st Runner-Up; and Ducted Wind Belt Farm using Film Strips for Alubijid, Misamis Oriental (Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan), 2nd Runner-Up.
