Oro’s Ancheta cops nat’l Shell Active chess title
CAGAYAN de Oro produced another national chess champion when David Rey Ancheta of Corpus Christi School ruled the kiddies division of the 2017 Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships Grand Finals concluded on Sunday at SM Mall of Asia in Metro Manila.
Ancheta was impressive in taking the 14-under crown of the 25th Shell Active chessfest, sadly now on its last year of sponsorship, as he defeated at least two Palaro medallists and yielded just two draws and no loss in the 9-round Swiss system event.
“I did not expect nga iyang mapeldi ang gold ug silver medallists last year sa Palaro. We’re so thankful to God for this success,” Dave’s ever supportive mother, Jeanny Ancheta told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro via long distance call.
Teacher Pearl `Ching’ Obenza, sports coordinator for Corpus Christi School in elementary level, said the younger Ancheta’s achievement will be an inspiration to his fellow school athletes.
“It takes several years for the school to have another national Shell chess champion,” Obenza said.
Corpus Christi, then represented by Lennon Hart Salgados, himself a Palaro gold medallist, also won the Shell Active’s kiddies chess championship in 2007.
Ancheta finished a full point ahead of Mark Jay Bacojo and Michael Concio Jr., The triumphant Suroca Duplexx dribblers after topping the 39-below championship of the recent Ballpals hoopfest in Cagayan de Oro. Supplied Photo
