Oro elem, secondary teams advance to finals
The CAGAYAN de Oro Futsal girls team of coach Dhon Lazo showed superior form from start to finish to defeat Misamis Occidental, 6-0 and win the gold medal in the Northern Mindanao Regional Athletic Association (NMRAA) competition held at the Gusa Elementary School gym.
They got two goals each from Maria Chantal Van Ommeren, Melgrace Camarillo, and Zippy Moss Medalla to secure their gold medal finish.
The CdO girls, whose core players are from the Xavier University High School also swept their opponents in the elims winning against Lanao Del Norte, 13-1, and Misamis Oriental, 7-0. In the battle for third, Bukidnon won the bronze medal after winning over Iligan City, 4-2.
They leaned on the the heroics of goalkeeper Eunice Roxanne Eduave during the penalty shootout in the semis to nip a strong Bukidnon side 2-0. Lourinne Juiseppe Lazo equalized for the Oro girls during regulation.
Zippy Medalla, daughter of the now Cebu based football coach Allan Medalla of Cagayan de Oro, was the most productive player on the pitch for the Oro girls. She scored four goals against Lanao del Norte, and three goals against Misamis Oriental. She also scored two goals against Misamis Occidental with a total of nine goals in the entire tournament.
