It’s Always up to Us

- By: Juaymah J. Ompoc

I have always been overwhelmed hearing all these news lately specially about the people committing mistakes, either small one or big ones. When I started working as a secretary in our Parish, my honesty and commitment has been tested. A job that concerns money is always a tough one.

When you see money everywhere part of you wants to spend it thinking you can always replace it when you have your paycheck. But we should always remember that it is always up to us to make things right and make right things. Even if given the fact it is us holding the money and it’s just us who know the spending, keep in mind that the money is not ours and spending it is never ethical. It is not been just about us being honest to other people, but also us being honest to ourselves. When we look in the mirror and see our reflection, who do we reflect? Is it someone worthy or someone who just play to be worthy?

My job becomes tougher when I later became a bookkeeper. It’s like doing my job and checking my own work. I became hesitant. Then our parish priest said, “Our job requires honesty. Just do your job honestly then we don’t have a problem”. I was asked to be transparent in everything I do, and I did and it gives a new sense of fulfillment. Being trusted by someone else and trusting yourself not to do things that may break their trust.

Whatever we do, it may be work, simple chores, or even in relationship, it is always up to us to know what is right from wrong, what is tolerable to what should not be done. A broken trust will never be rebuilt. In any case It is always the case.
