Palace forbids ‘extravagant’ attire during 2018 Sona

-

NEARLY two weeks before President Rodrigo Duterte’s third State of the Nation Address (Sona) on July 23, Malacañang on Thursday, July 13, reminded guests that they could not don an “extravagant” outfit.

Speaking to Palace reporters, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. said there are many ways for Sona attendees to become “elegant” without being clad in a glamorous attire.

“Bawal ang extravagant [attire]. But they have their ways to become elegant. So let them be with their ways,” the Palace official said.

(Extravagant [attire] is not allowed. But they have their ways to become elegant. So let them be with their ways.)

Lawmakers and other Sona guests have traditionally flaunted their gowns during the grand red carpet fashion show.

Duterte, however, has since changed the dress code for Sona to business attire as he prefers a “simple” annual event.

Sona guests have been discouraged to wear tuxedos, evening gowns, or any elaborate outfits and are instead urged to don business attire or Barong for men, and business attire or knee-length Filipiniana dress for women.

This year, the President is expected to wear Barong Tagalog, Roque said.

Roque reiterated that the President would merely read a prepared speech not exceeding 35 minutes.

Duterte’s family members are expected to grace the annual event that will be held at the Batasan Complex in Quezon City.

Members of Congress and their spouses, foreign diplomats, government officials, and other dignitaries are also invited to attend Duterte’s Sona. (Ruth Abbey Gita/SunStar Philippines)
