TWO City Councilors on Monday back the proposed increase in the salary of public school teachers.

City Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya said the salary increase of teachers is long overdue.

“We have been hearing from the President that people in uniform is the priority, but how about the unsung heroes,” he said.

Nacaya said that the government misses its obligation to the most important factor of the country’s education system, which are the teachers.

Councilor Suzzette Magtajas-Daba, the chairperson of the committee on

education meanwhile urges national government officials to step up to get the increase they deserve.

She said if the government can spend billions in infrastructure projects, it sure can approve an amount for the teachers.

“They have extended working hours, because after school they need to attend to their lesson plan, compute grades, etc. They are an all around worker, they use their own money sometimes to improve the learning of the students,” she said.

“We want to maintain good teachers. The government spends billions in infra projects, I’m pretty sure that the proposed salary raise will go a long way,” she added.

The city council passed a resolution urging the Congress of the Philippines and the Department of Education to highly consider increasing the salaries of teachers throughout the country.

Currently, public school teachers’ salaries range from P19,000 to P43,000, depending on their level. In addition, they get allowances and bonuses.

President Duterte has promised to increase the salary of the teachers by directing the Department of Budget and Management and other agencies to find ways particularly the second tax reform package of the national government.
