Gan: Drug war lacks support from City Hall

- By Alwen Saliring

Opposition city councilor Leon Gan yesterday, October 24, said the support of the city government for the police’s war on drugs is insufficient.

Gan said the local government should help the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) in carrying out the government’s campaign against illegal drugs.

He said the menace of illegal drugs in the city remains to be a perennial problem that has to be addressed by the police and

backed by the city government.

“Kulang ang suporta sa LGU sa war on drugs kay hangtod karon wala pa masulbad ang issue sa droga busa kinahanglan iduot pa ang kampanya sa syudad ngadto sa mga kabarangayan,” Gan said.

The city council’s minority floor leader said the city government must seriously take the government’s drug war aligned with President Rodrigo Duterte’s campaign.

Gan said the city government should have already given the additional fund requested by the Cocpo for their anti-illegal drug operations.

Cocpo spokesperson Superintendent Mardy Hortillosa II said the city police would have not asked the local government for more budget had the aid been enough.

But, Hortillosa said they understand that they are not the only priority of the city government and what they can do is to wait until the requested budget is approved.

“Kung sakto pa wala na unta ta nag-request og dugang pero nakasabot ta nga dili lang kita ang priority sa kagamhanan kung matagaan ta malipay mi kay dako kini nga tabang para ma-secure ang dakbayan,” Hortillosa said.

However, city councilor Ian Mark Nacaya said the city government has been supportive to the city police.

Nacaya said the Philippine National Police (PNP) is a national government entity but the city government has been supplementing to support law enforcers.

“Everyday is a challenge to governance kay ang demand sa responsibility is increasing everyday ug ang demand sad sa services is increasing everyday. Dili man gyud makompleto tanan pero naningkamot ang dakbayan nga makaayuda sa kapolisan,” Nacaya said.
