Business MisOcc high school wins DTI regional quiz bowl
LABO National High School in Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental has emerged as winner of the recently concluded Consumer Welfare Month Regional Quiz Bowl last Wednesday, October 24, held at Mallberry Suites Business Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.
Among the 15 participants from different high schools all over Northern Mindanao, John Mark Colcol and Shirly Calajat of Labo National High School got the champion and second place, respectively, of the consumer welfare-related quiz bee spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
Mary Joy Momo of Lala National High School from Lanao del Norte, on the other hand, placed third.
Asked how Colcol prepare for the quiz bowl, the high school student said he underwent two weeks of constant review and constant prayer.
The regional quiz bowl is one of the activities of DTI in celebrating the Consumer Welfare Month, with the theme: “Making Digital Market Places Fairer.”
The quiz bowl’s questions were anchored on the consumer rights and responsibilities under the Consumer Act of the Philippines and practical problems that the consumers face daily.
“As young as they are, they already have the knowledge and information that they work, they can use it whenever they encounter consumer problems, they know how to enforce their responsibilities, they know how to assert their rights. They can also share the information, what they have learned here, in their re- spective communities,” lawyer Fel Lester Brillantes, DTI-Northern Mindanao chief of Consumer Welfare Division, said.
The regional quiz bowl is just one of the DTI’s strategies to impart consumer rights and knowledge to the consuming public, especially the youth or students who are susceptible to everything online, thus, making them easy targets for online scammers.
