House Bill strengthens laws vs socmed shaming, bashing of women and their children
Responsive to the growing number of incidents and cases of electronic violence against women and children, the House of Representative has prioritized House Bill 8655 updating current relevant laws.
After second reading approval, final reading passage is assured and transmittal to the Senate is mere days away, according to the bill’s principal author and House Assistant Majority Leader.
“We have now made it easier for victims, law enforcers and prosecutors to bring to justice abusers and perverts who use social media and other means of electronic communication to inflict psychological violence and humiliation against women and children,” said Rep. Bernadette Herrera, Chair of the House Committee on Women and Gender Equality.
“Kapag naisabatas na ang E-VAWC, mas madali nang makakalap ang ebidensiya at mabubura sa internet ang anumang malalaswa at mapanirangpuring posts o comments ng mga abusado at manyak,” she also said.
The Bagong Henerasyon Party-list congresswoman said HB 8655 proves the “responsiveness of Congress to current and emerging threats to the welfare of women and children.”
“HB 8655 also shows how relevant Bagong Henerasyon Party-list is to millennials and postmillennials who are the most active in cyberspace and social media because they are the digital world’s natives,” Herrera said.
