THE City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (Clenro) of Cagayan de Oro City has conducted a city-wide plogging activity in celebrating the World Environment Day on Wednesday, June 5.

The activity was participated by the employees of Clenro, barangay officials, private companies and civic society groups.

They proceeded to cleaning the whole stretch of the national highway from Barangay Iponan to Bugo.

“Malampuson nga napahigayon ang city-wide plogging sa mga barangays nga nahimutang sa highway sa dakbayan. Upat ka barangay lang ang aktibo nga misalmot sama sa Barangay Iponan, Kauswagan, Gusa ug Cugman,” said Clenro Chief engineer Armen Cuenca.

“Samtang ang mga barangay nga wala misalmot ang taga-Clenro nga empleyado na ang mihimo sa paghinlo sa maong barangays,” he added.

The plogging activity, picking of garbage while jogging, started around 5 in the morning of Wednesday.

“Kini nga kalihukan gilunsad uban sa tumong nga mapatuhop sa kahimatngon sa katawhan sa

pagpanghinlo sa palibot ug paglabay sa basura sa ensaktong labayana,” Cuenca said.

The Clenro chief also expressed his gratitude to barangay captains Dondon Allorin, Boyet Escobia, Marlo Tabac, and Pedro Balete for their support and cooperation during the aforementioned activity.

Meanwhile, the Ecological Waste Coalition of the Philippines (EcoWaste Coalition) has called out to the government, industry, civil society and the citizenry to “join hands in advancing real solutions to the chemical and waste pollution that is threatening the health and future of human beings as well as other life forms that co-inhabit the planet with us.”

“We need to shift away from dirty and toxic practices that tend to pollute Mother Earth, affecting her capacity to support the present and future generations,” Thony Dizon, Chemical and Safety campaigner of EcoWaste Coalition, said.

The local Initiative for Holistic Upbringing of Knowledge (Lihuk), a group that advocates for maintaining an eco-friendly and sustainable lifestyle, on the other hand, has expressed its support in the World Environmental Day 2019 celebration.

“This year’s theme ‘Take Action #BeatAirPollution’ tackles about how the humans can contribute and take action on dealing with air pollution,” Lihuk secretary Joan Sheng, said.

Sheng added that one can minimize or take action to eradicate air pollutants through planting more trees by joining or organizing a tree planting activity; starting a zero waste lifestyle; buying locally-made products for lesser carbon footprint on delivery; and doing a lot of walking instead of driving or riding a public transport.

“Let us protect out mother nature and together let us beat the air pollution,” Sheng said.

World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect the environment. Since it began in 1974, the event has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.;
