Davao’s Holy Cross stuns San Sebastian

2019 ARAW NG DON CARLOS HOOPFEST

-

DON CARLOS, Bukidnon— University of the Visayas (UV) formalized its entry into the championship round after registering its fourth-straight victory in as many games yesterday.

The UV Green Lancers completed a 91-82 demolition job over the Philippine Countryville College of Maramag, Bukidnon in the 8th Felix Manzano National Inter-Collegiate basketball tournament at the Don Carlos Bukidnon Astrodome here.

The boys of UV coach Junil Maglasang, who are also the 2018 Cebu Schools Athletic Federation (Cesafi) men’s basketball champions, positioned themselves at the front row of the whooping P75,000 cash prize as the other’s finals seat is still up for grabs with three teams scrambling to secure the last slot for the championship round left.

After a heart-breaking loss at the hands of the Green Lancers, the Holy Cross College of Davao Crusaders fanned its championship hopes alive after tallying a huge upset against the favoured San Sebastian CollegeRecoletos of Manila as the boys of Holy Cross mentor Caloy Salvador escaped with an 86-85 win over San Sebastian.

Holy Cross’ victory improved their win-loss slate to 2-2.

The San Sebastian College-Recoletos of Manila cagers, however, bounced back from their frustrating loss to Holy Cross later in the day as they dismantled the Philippine Countryville College of Maramag, Bukidnon, 9376, to bring its win-loss slate to 2-2, and tie Holy Cross for the second spot going into the championship round.

The situation, though, could still get complicated as the Agro-Industrial College Foundation of the Philippines is still also very much alive in its hunt for the all-important championship round seat.

The Agro-Industrial College Foundation of the Philippines, which carries a 1-2 slate, is still fighting against the ousted Philippine Countryville College

of Maramag at presstime yesterday.

A victory by Agro over PCC will tie with the former for the second spot with SSC-R and Holy Cross with 2-2 slates each.

In this case, the quotient system will be followed and the team with the highest rating will

face UV in the championship while the remaining two will battle it out for the spot.

The tournament, which being held in line with the celebration of the 53rd Araw ng Don Carlos , will dole out P75,00 cash to the champion, while the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placers will take home P50,000, P30,000 and P20,000 each, respectively. (Jade S. Violeta/Contributor)
