Architects sketch for kid cancer awareness

-

AGROUP of Cebu-based architects has been going around Cebu not to check construction sites but to sketch and paint. Whether it’s watercolor or pen and ink, Arkisketchers Cebu are busy filling their sketch pads with drawings and paintings of heritage buildings, rural scenes, as well as the growing urban landscape.

“We meet on weekends, anywhere within Cebu, and just sketch or paint what we see on location,” said Loloy Castro of Arkisketchers. “We are also trying to bring back the ‘lost art’ of sketching, as most people nowadays have become so digitally focused.”

Through their work, the group also tries to capture everyday scenes and various walks of life. “There is so much about Cebu to show, and by sketching and painting, we are telling a story of a particular moment one art work at a time. It’s one of the best ways to showcase Cebu, both architecturally and artistically,” Castro said.

The Arkisketchers not just have a common passion for sketching, they share a common cause as well. The group recently had a sketching session with children diagnosed with cancer at the Balay Silungan, the headquarters of the Cancer Warriors Foundation Cebu Chapter. Later this week, they will hold their first exhibit called “Strokes,” with half of the proceeds of the exhibit to be used to buy medicines for these children.

“Through the exhibit, we are helping the Cancer Warriors generate awareness for their cause. Anyone who wishes to help the cancer warriors can purchase our artworks,” Castro said.

Exhibiting artists inlclude Anthony Abelgas, Ryan Cabanlit, Loloy Castro, Fatima Castro, Aliver Escaño, Joseph Judilla, Augusto Lee, Philip Lim, Jenny Miala, Josephril Partosa, Clint Ponsica, Ralph Monteza, Ray Racho, Richie Vios, and Maxicel Migallos. The exhibit will be held on the ground floor of Robinsons Galleria Cebu from Feb. 16 to 25.

And if their passion isn’t inspiring enough, the Arkisketchers do welcome those who wish to join the group, Castro said. How? “Just find us on the streets of Cebu!”
