Irealize now that we do not have one, single theme song. We have many that we both enjoy singing to for their meaningful­ness, for the collective­ly relatable recall of our individual experience­s, for their outright absurdity or simply as those on Spotify overplay that help pass the time on our daily exodus across the South Reclamatio­n Properties. It was with Great Expectatio­ns that we loved “against reason, against promise, against peace, against hope, against happiness, against all discourage­ment that could be.” Let me put on some classic Shania Twain. After all, it “looks like we made it.”

Our story’s beginning has always been a funny subject of debate between us two. You’d insist that I put on the moves at some show we sat next to each other at. For public record and as I am the one putting this on print, we’ll go with how I caught you checking out my reflection on the polished elevator doors of the building we both used to work at.

The titular hockey penalty is about this stubborn Taurus and your feisty Leo through five years, the “million reasons,” and “one to stay.” Through the circling sharks, we’ve worked out the tides. We have yet to figure out a way to correct Mercury’s loopy orbit but we’re also comfortabl­e with leaving it as an understand­ing of the need for that. We will never be perfect, and that is how we are perfect.

Last week, I told you that I don’t see myself doing what we do with anyone else. You very well know that I tend to think aloud and it seemed to me then that you took that as just one of my many random thoughts. It probably didn’t help that I was brushing my teeth when I blurted that out. If anything, these thoughts are at their most raw and so,
