Joseph Ong Photography Canon Professional

How did you discover your passion for photography? “I was looking for a creative outlet that could satisfy my passion for the arts while I was working at my previous job. It so happened that there was this wave of interest in photography. I picked up the current since then. Honestly, my love for the arts and the beauty I can create from it pushed me to pursue this career.” How and when did you become a professional photographer? “It was 13 years ago when I shot an ad campaign for a shopping mall in Cebu.” How long have you been working in the industry? “I’ve been working as a hobbyist for 14 years and 13 years as a commercial photographer.” What do you enjoy most about your line of work? “Meeting new friends in this creative industry. The wedding industry is quite unpredictable which makes it exciting. We are solving many creative problems and each one requires a different approach – be it in style, skill or technique – that makes everything a thrilling journey. I love to take many exciting creative journeys as much as possible. Wedding photography has so much potential to introduce more creative options and originality. I cannot wait to stamp a bolder romance and beauty in this field.” Can you share the most memorable photo shoot you’ve had? “My most memorable would have to be my daredevil tricks just to capture the best shot for a cityscape commission. I was literally a meter away from the edge of a rooftop! It was worth it and the client approved. The level of commitment has got to be evident too along with passion. But I’m not entirely sure if I’ll do it again sometime in the future.” Describe your style of photography. “I’m so lucky to have experienced various facets when it comes to this field. It’s really important to maintain a style that serves as your guidance in terms of the visual cues and values, so you can convey a clearer message. My style in the context of image-making is borrowed from the masters of chiaroscuro. The heavy contrast of shadows and illumination is my favorable route. But I can’t help myself when capturing precious moments for couples, thus bringing out the romantic side of me. In this category, I go for the opposite. My wedding photos are always bright in delicious setting and fashion. In terms of work ethic, my style is constant professionalism.”
