These folks availed themselves of free cooking oil that spilled from a cargo loaded on a wing van that lost its brakes as it was going downhill on the highway of Yati, Liloan, Cebu last Wednesday. The cargo was worth P11 million.
RESIDENTS of Barangay Yati, Liloan, Cebu brought pails and containers so they could bring home some of the 23 tons of palm edible oil from a wing van that fell on its side on the road in Bag-ong Dan last Wednesday morning.
The wing van lost its brakes while trying to navigate a steep road, which resulted in the accident.
SPO2 Andrew Rellanos, traffic investigator of Liloan Police Station, identified the driver as 47-year-old Carlito Mabolo.
The truck, which came from Barangay Paknaan, Mandaue City, was supposed to deliver the oil, which was worth P940,000, to Tacloban City, Leyte.
The truck was also carrying packs of bihon (rice noodles) worth P29,000.
Rellanos said the truck was headed to Da- nao City to board.
“It was true the truck lost its brakes. These would no longer hold,” he said in Cebuano.

Mabolo and a colleague were not injured.
Rellanos said the truck was not overloaded because it was not fully occupied.
He said they also checked Mabolo’s driver license and it shows that he has been driving since 1993.
The incident caused heavy traffic for vehicles going to Mandaue City and to northern Cebu.
The Liloan Traffic Police immediately deployed police officers and barangay tanods to advice passing motorists to slow down.
Rellanos said a motorcycle fell because the road was slippery, but no one was injured.
Rellanos said the rest of the oil and the bihon was donated to Liloan’s Social Welfare Office, as the owner advised.
