SM holds 1st national kids book reading day

Over 300 children, including those with special needs, turned up for event

SM Seaside City Cebu recently held its first National Children’s Book Reading Day (NCBRD) at the Mountain Wing Atrium.

A project of SM Cares through the SM Cares Program on Youth and Children’s Welfare, the Book Reading Day celebrated and encouraged reading by young children.

Over 300 children participated in the event held last July 19, including special children under the care of the Organization of Rehabilitative Advocate for Inclusion (ORAI) from the different municipalities in Cebu Province.

ORAI members and volunteers organized different activities during the event, such as mural and charcoal painting, and dance and voice lessons. Kids also received goodie bags after the activity.

The story-tellers were led by Ms. Cebu 2016 Gabrielle Raine Abellana Baljak and television host and Ms. Cebu 2010 Reena Elena Malinao–Tan.

During the activity, kids experienced the wonderful world of books through story-telling that helped reinforce a child’s imagination. The exercise also enhanced proper values and encouraged children to explore and learn more about other cultures.

The SM Cares Program on Youth and Children’s Welfare was created to put into action SM’s advocacy for the young members in the society. In all the SM Supermalls, employees, front-liners and mall tenants are regularly taught how to manage children and how to cater to a child in distress.

SM conducts year-round programs and trainings to encourage children to be responsible citizens and to teach them Filipino values.

SM continues to uphold its commitment to Filipino youth in many ways.
