Stars continue to flock to convention

-

The Democrats’ campaign went Hollywood slick with a five-minute film on Hillary Clinton made by Scandal producer Shonda Rhimes and narrated by Morgan Freeman. It was interesting to see how the networks responded to it.

CNN, NBC, MSNBC and PBS aired the film, which was shown to the convention just before Clinton spoke. ABC and Fox News Channel were decidedly uncomfortable about airing it, and their commentators talked over it. CBS showed a small portion of the film. Fox is a known Republican network. Some Twitter users were alarmed when Freeman became the top-trending topic on Twitter yesterday (Thursday night in the US). Some immediately thought something happened to the A-list actor.

Fortunately, Freeman was merely narrating the Clinton video.

“Here is a woman. What does she dream of? When does she feel proud? How many times will she leave her mark? How many ways will she light up the world?” Freeman’s highly recognizable voice began.

Here are some of the funny tweets about Freeman:

Huffington Post’s Arianna Huffington referring to Freeman’s commanding voice: “When Morgan Freeman tells you to ‘look at her face,’ you look at her face.”

@Razorleef: “#MorganFreeman trending scared me for a second.”

@SamVimes6: #MorganFreeman is trending... No, no, no, no, no.... *checks tweets*... Oh, he narrated a video for @HillaryClinton... Thank god.”

Also on the fourth day of the Democratic National Convention, Katy Perry debuted her new song live onstage. Rise, Perry’s latest single, is also the theme song of the American team to the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

Orlando Bloom made sure he had Perry’s performance recorded on his cellphone.

Chloe Moretz, one of the youngest convention speakers at 19, talked about the youth’s inclination toward apathy.

“I am a Millennial. Four out of five young people actually stayed home in the 2014 congressional election. Just imagine, imagine what can happen if we all make our voices heard this November at the ballot box,” said Moretz. Former NBA player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar made the audience laugh with his spiel.

“Hello, everyone. I’m Michael Jordan, and I’m here with Hillary,” the crowd erupted in laughter. “I said that because I know that Donald Trump could not

tell the difference.”
