THERE will be no classes and work today in Mandaue City in celebration of its 47th Charter Day.

President Rodrigo Duterte issued Presidential Proclamation 40 declaring Aug. 30 as a special non-working holiday in Mandaue City.

According to the City Public Information Office, the presidential proclamation was signed by Salvador Medialdea, executive secretary of the president, last Aug. 10.

Councilors Demetrio Cortes Jr. and Ernie Manatad earlier sponsored a resolution requesting the Office of the President to declare today as a holiday so everyone can join the City Government’s activities for the celebration of Mandaue’s cityhood.

A mass was scheduled at the National Shrine of Saint Joseph at 6 a.m. today.

After the mass, a short parade will start at the City Hall grounds then to the Mandaue Sports Complex before going back to City Hall.

Mandaue City Mayor Gabriel Luis Quisumbing will lead city officials and employees in attending the activities.

Quisumbing will also lead the unveiling of the portraits of the past mayors after the parade.

The City had allocated P4 million to hold the activities for the Charter Day and set aside P5 million for the bonus of employees.

Only the 800 regular employees will receive bonuses of up to P10,000 each, according to assistant Mandaue City Treasurer Julia Ballesteros.

Earlier, Vice Mayor Carlo Fortuna and Councilor Cynthia Remedio, chairman of the City Council’s committee on tourism, led the opening of the photo exhibit in Parkmall.

The photo exhibit shows what was Mandaue in the past and who were the people that contributed to the development of the City.

Councilors Nilo Seno, Nenito Layese and Ernie Manatad were also there last Aug. 12.

Josephus Bihag, head of the City Tourism Department, said the photo exhibit runs until today.

Part of the celebration are the inter-department basketball and volleyball tournaments.
