LAWYER Benjamin Cabrido, Mandaue City consultant on environmental protection, recommended the closure of a dumpsite in Barangay Umapad for rehabilitation.
Cabrido presented his fouryear rehabilitation plan before the City Council’s session last week. The plan also included the proposal for the City to open an alternative dumping site in the upland village of Casili.
Cabrido presented his plan to the council during his confirmation as the City’s environmental protection consultant.
During the session, Cabrido informed the council that the solid waste management board already prepared the four-year rehabilitation plan for the dumpsite.

The Umapad dumpsite is located at the left side of the Marcelo Fernan Bridge, and a por- tion of this is facing the Mactan Channel.
“We cannot implement the plan if we will not close the Umapad (dumpsite),” said Cabrido.
During the rehabilitation, Cabrido suggested for the City to find an area as an alternative dumping site in Barangay Casili.
Cabrido’s proposals, though, still need the approval of the City Council.
Vice Mayor and presiding officer Carlo Fortuna also wants that a public consultation be conducted in Casili before deciding on the matter.
Cabrido assured to provide the council copies of his proposed rehabilitation plan, including the possible alternative landfill on a five-hectare lot in Barangay Casili.
