Duterte expected to name 1st SC appointee next month

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte is set to make his first appointmen­t to the High Court next month, as the Judicial and Bar Council has scheduled the interviews for qualified applicants vying for the post of retiring Supreme Court Associate Justice Jose Perez.

In an advisory, the SC said interviews for all the candidates applying for the position will be on Nov. 16.

Only seven out of the 14 candidates will be interviewe­d on Nov. 16 as the others had already undergone interviews by the JBC.

Among those required to appear before the panel are Public Attorneys Office (PAO) Chief Persida Rueda-Acosta and Court of Appeals (CA) Associate Justice Japar Dimaampao.

Pasig Regional Trial Court Judge Rowena Apao-Adlawan, Centro Escolar University law school vice dean Rita Linda Ventura-Jimeno, and Sandiganba­yan Associate Justice Samuel Martires will also be interviewe­d in the morning while chief state counsel Ricardo Paras III and CA Justice Noel Tijam will face the council on the afternoon.

The other seven candidates are CA Presiding Justice Andres Reyes, CA Justices Rosmari Carandang, Jose Reyes, Stephen Cruz and Apolinario Bruselas; Sandiganba­yan Justice Alex Quiroz; and Quezon City Judge Reynaldo Daway.

After the interviews, the JBC will vote and make a shortlist to which President Rodrigo Duterte can pick his choice for the post.
