Frat, Red Cross set bloodletting drive on Dec. 3
THE Alpha Sigma Phi Phils. Inc., in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross, will hold a nationwide simultaneous blood donation campaign on Dec. 3, in line with the fraternity’s 171st International Founder’s Day.
In Cebu, the activity dubbed as “Hazing Kills! Save Life, Give Blood,” will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the second floor of Parkmall in Mandaue City.
Engr. Camelo Antonio Tompar, the group’s national president, said that this will be their fifth year in holding the bloodletting program.
In 2015, Tompar said that a total of 550 bags of blood were collected nationwide, with 60 of these were from Cebu.
“I am urging everyone, including other fraternities, students, police and private sector, to support and join the activity,” said Tompar.
He said that the campaign started with the fraternity’s antihazing advocacy.
“Hazing kills people. Save life by donating blood,” he said.
Apart from campaigning for blood donations, Tompar said that his group also supports the program of the government to solve the illegal drug problem. They are particularly campaigning to stop the use of illegal drugs in colleges and universities through information dissemination.
Tompar said that his group also intends to raise a Good Samaritan fund amounting to P100,000, which will be donated to the Philippine Red Cross Cebu Chapter. The funds will be used to those who cannot afford to pay the processing fee when availing themselves of the services of the agency.
Before donating blood, donors are advised to sleep at least six to eight hours; no intake of alcoholic beverages at least 12 to 24 hours; no smoking of tobacco at least four hours prior to the scheduled donation; donors should not be suffering from sore throat, colds, cough, allergy, fever, and blood pressure should be within acceptable limits; drink plenty of fluids, and take only healthy and light meal.
For female donors, menstrual period should be a week after or a week before.
