‘Everyone must work for peace’

-

THE new Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Central Command (Centcom) commander promised he will continue the fight against illegal drugs and terrorism.

Major Gen. Oscar Lactao, who replaced his “mistah” Lt. Gen. Raul del Rosario yesterday, said he also supports the government’s efforts in attaining peace with the communist rebels.

Commitment

In his speech, Lactao said he is committed to implementing the AFP’s “internal peace and security plan bayanihan,” which aims to win peace and not just defeating the enemies.

The official said it is a “whole-of-nation approach.”

“Lahat tayo, hindi lang sundalo (All of us, not just the soldiers),” said Lactao. “It is for this reason that I call on all elected government officials, our partners in national government agencies, the civil society organizations, the clergy, media and most of all our countrymen. Without you, without us working together, we could not claim peace and win the peace in this part of the country.”

The turnover of command was presided by Lt. Gen. Glorioso Miranda, the vice chief of staff.

Lactao, member of the Philippine Military Academy Maharlika Class 1984, was the AFP Inspector General, before AFP Chief of Staff General Ricardo Visaya appointed him to take the helm of Centcom.

Pilot

After the turnover ceremony held at Centcom’s headquarters, Camp LapuLapu, Del Rosario flew to Western Command (Westcom) in Puerto Princesa, Palawan and was installed as its commander.

Del Rosario was former fighter pilot who patrolled the West Philippine Sea in his younger days with the Air Force.

Commanders often designated in Westcom are navy and Air Force generals who have knowledge on sea and air warfare.

Del Rosario served Centcom for three months. He took the command after Lt. Gen. Nicanor Vivar retired last August.
