Talisay grocery selling meat for dogs
NMIS 7 inspectors also discover that these are displayed next to meat for human consumption
NMIS team has been going around meat-selling stores as part of its campaign for clean, consumable meat during the holidays
THE National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) 7 called the attention of one of Talisay City’s groceries stores after it discovered that meat for dogs was being sold along with meat for humans.
The team from NMIS led by Dr. Jasper Jumadiao was conducting inspections as part of the agency’s campaign for clean and consumable meat during the Christmas and New Year season.
Jumadiao told reporters that one of the groceries was selling overdue meat intended for dogs at a much cheaper price next to fresh meat without a label to distinguish one from the other.
Warning
He urged management to separate the two and to place labels on the meat so customers will know which one is for human consumption.
NMIS 7 inspectors also found that tongs used to pick up the meat don’t have proper receptacles, making these susceptible to contamination.
Aside from the meat, NMIS 7 inspectors also checked the groceries’ facilities, such as freezers.
They are also checking if the groceries have proper documentation for the meat they sell to customers.
Jumadiao said that for now, their inspections will serve as a warning to meatselling establishments.
The next time, however, they will confiscate meat that they think is no longer consumable for human standards and even sanction the grocery.
In a separate interview, managers of both groceries assured Jumadiao and his fellow inspectors that they will follow their recommendations.
