Miss Oslob 2016

-

The debate on the outcome of the screening and the choice of the final entries to the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) later this month still continues.

While the big projects that had been sidelined like Super Parental Guardians, Enteng Kabisote 10 and the Abangers and Mano Po 7 – Chinoy had secured early playdates, many are still pessimistic as to the boxoffice result of the eight entries which, as perceived by those opposed to the line-up, have less box-office drawing power.

Personally, I have high hopes that this change implemented by the committee that handled the screening will bring positive results to the festival and to the local film industry as a whole.

Of course, there might be a big reduction in the box-office earnings but that is expected and understandable. But if the committee will just be firm and consistent and do the same next year, the moviegoing public will surely get used to it and have no choice but to patronize them.

After all, going to the movies is more cost-efficient than going out of town or any other activity to celebrate the season.

As I mentioned last week, it might be wise to move the MMFF to an earlier date if it really wants to live up to the mission and vision of the festival and come up with quality and not just commercially viable projects.

As the moviegoers are already used to seeing light and funny movies in consonance with the season, perhaps it would also be good to come up with a Christmas film festival of sorts to accommodate such projects.

*** Young stars Joshua Garcia, Julia Barretto and Ronnie Alonte felt flattered when they were told that there is a big chance that their movie, Vince & Kath & James, will end up as the MMFF’s top grosser.

Actually, it’s very possible as the young stars have already developed a wide fan base plus the fact that the story is easy to relate to.

As of this writing, Star Cinema people were arranging a mall tour for the three stars in Cebu on Dec. 22 to promote the movie. Keep posted.

Meanwhile, Vice Ganda might also come to thank the Cebuanos for the huge turnout of his starrer, Super Parental Guardians, where he co-stars with Coco Martin. Tentative schedule is Dec. 18. Again, keep posted.

*** Tonight, 12 lovely Oslobanon ladies will vie for the crown and title of Miss Oslob 2016. The candidates are Ma. Catherina Mirasol (Barangay Bangcogon), Jocel May Taborada (Bonbon), April Joy Labiste (Calumpang), Regina Caynila (Daanlungsod), Mary Kristine Friolo (Lagundi), Angel Lynn Basig (Looc), Rose Kesha Louesse Vergara (Luka), Ma. Pinky Ondiano (Mainit), Jeneva Mae Gilles (Nueva Caceres), Faith Fergette Golda Perez (Poblacion), Angela Kaye Ventic (Pungtod) and Thea Claire Gumandoy (Tumalog).

Surprise performers will appear in the pageant. Meanwhile, tomorrow, the 1st Mayor Jun Tumulak Motocross competition will unfold at the Estaca in Barangay Daanlungsod.

The whole day affair is expected to draw crowds. It also replaced the usual festival which was set aside this year.

*** Cebuano stargazers had a blast last Saturday when GMA 7 held two mall shows with the Kapuso stars of the upcoming teleseries Meant To Be, entertaining and personally promoting their project.

Kapuso best actress and drama sweetheart Barbie Forteza and her co-stars in the series Jak Roberto, Addy Raj and Ivan Dorschner had intimate interviews with the E-Group after having lunch at Kuya J on Escario St.

After the chat, the four proceeded to Gaisano Capital SRP in Talisay City for a show at 4 p.m. and then to Gaisano Capital South in Cebu City for another Kapuso Mall Show at 6 p.m.

Oliver Amoroso, officer-in-charge of GMA’s Regional TV Department, said that the shows are GMA’s way of giving “a memorable holiday season” so they can “witness firsthand the chemistry between Barbie and her co-stars in the upcoming series.”

The Kapuso light romance drama also features Ken Chan, Keempee de Leon, Sef Cadayona, the reunited ‘90’s Triplets Manilyn Reynes, Sheryl Cruz and Tina Paner, veteran actress Gloria Romero, child actor Zymic Jaranilla and Mika dela Cruz.
