TALISAY City has yet to establish a firecracker zone, an official said yesterday.
But no firecracker seller has paid City Hall a visit yet to express intention to sell firecrackers for Christmas and New Year, said Chief Insp. Randy Mendaros, Talisay City fire marshal.
Mendaros told Sun. Star Cebu that they are still looking at various areas that can be made as firecracker zones, including a vacant lot located across City Hall in Barangay Lawaan 2. Mendaros said he plans to coordinate with the owner of the property.
Mendaros said that even though Christmas is near, no one has approached their office yet to submit requirements to sell firecrackers.
He said only three pyrotechnics manufacturers had asked for permission to sell their products on two department stores in the city.
Last Thursday, Mendaros and his personnel visited the malls to conduct an inspection on the pyrotechnics manufacturers who applied for permit.
But during their visit to a mall in Barangay Lawaan 1, Mendaros noticed that the pyrotechnic manufacturers had not started selling yet.
The mall has reportedly ordered firecracker sellers to start selling their wares on Dec. 16.
The manager of the mall also told Mendaros and his personnel that they will not allow pyrotechnic sellers to display their wares inside the mall. They have to display their products outside.
Another mall in Talisay City has decided to allow only two pyrotechnic manufacturers to sell their products in their establishment to prevent untoward incidents.
Mendaros said no one has applied to sell at the city’s soon-to-be designated firecracker zone due to growing negative perception against firecrackers.
He also warned sellers of firecrackers that their products could be confiscated if they sell outside the designated firecracker zone or if they fail to register before the city.
