BIENVENIDO and Leonarda Baguio waited for more than two hours at Cebu City Hall yesterday afternoon to claim their financial assistance from the City Government.

Although Bienvenido, 82, has his own pension to support them, the couple decided they could use additional cash for their maintenance medicines.

Bienvenido also wanted to take his wife out on a date.

Leonarda, 79, said they have maintenance medicines for hypertension and heart illness.

“The financial assistance that the City has been extending to the elderly is very helpful to us, especially those with no pensions and those who are dependent on their children. At least, we have something we can call our own,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.

Yesterday, 60,000 qualified seniors in the city got P2,000 cash aid, which served as the last tranche of their P12,000 annual financial assistance from the City.

Instead of getting their cash from the designated distribution center in Barangay Mabolo, the couple chose to claim it at the City Treasurer’s Office in City Hall.

Convenient

Bienvenido, a retired seaman, said it was more convenient for them to get it at City Hall because there were fewer beneficiaries there and they didn’t need to fall in line.

“My wife has difficulty walking and I need to assist her every time we go somewhere. I know she can’t stand the hours of waiting at the distribution center, that’s why we de- cided to come to City Hall. Besides, it is air conditioned here and chairs are provided for us,” he said.

Seniors who failed to claim their financial as- sistance may go to Plaza Sugbo tomorrow where the distribution will continue.

Bienvenido said he will set aside portion of the amount to take his wife out.

“Even if we’re already old, we need to keep the fire burning for our love. This is how we can express our love for each other. I need to take her out to

Leonarda said she has no problem with the plans of her husband as she has always been supportive of him.

“He makes me happy in everything he does. Even before when we were still younger until now that we’re old, he has always made my welfare and happiness his priority. His love has never faded,” Leonarda said.

The couple, who recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, said they will just eat in an affordable restaurant once they get their money.
