No segregation, no collection in Naga

-

THE City Government of Naga, Cebu will strictly enforce a “no segregation, no collection” of garbage policy starting next year.

Engr. Arthur Villamor, City of Naga, Cebu administrator, however, clarified that the implementation in January is considered a “honeymoon period.”

“Dili pa gyud (It’s not yet) full implementation. We want the residents to familiarize themselves with the policy,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.

This is not supported by a city ordinance, wherein they could impose penalties against those who refuse to segregate their garbage, he said.

But Villamor said the City Council will eventually pass an ordinance once the residents and business establishments in Naga have already accepted the policy.

Starting January, the City’s waste contractor, FDRCon will stop collecting household wastes that have been not been segregated into biodegradable, non- biodegradable and residual waste.

Villamor cited Republic Act 9003, known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Law, as basis for their policy.

The program is also part of the 10-point program of City of Naga Mayor Kristine Vanessa Chiong, particularly her plan to intensify and enforce the city’s Greening and Solid Waste Management program.

With the policy, around 20 to 25 tons of the city’s household waste collected in a daily basis could be reduced to half. The City spends P750 per ton of garbage collected on a daily basis.
