Staying fit through the holidays

- BY PIO SOLON (piogerardsolon@yahoo.com)

It’s the season again to party and gain weight. But you don’t really have to, especially if you’re particular about your health during this season. So how can we maintain our fitness and health through this season?

Pocket workouts. It’s the season for parties and horrible traffic. Sadly, this eats into our day as there is less time for exercise and staying healthy. What can we do? Put in a quick 20-minute workout before breakfast. What does this do? It gets exercise out of the way, and tells your brain that health is a priority. A 20-minute workout can consist of a few bodyweight exercises, burpees, core exercises, shadow boxing, jumping jacks or a light jog. Prepare for your parties. This is a tip I’ve learned from some peers. Typicaly, if there’s a party later during the day, we prepare for it by eating fruits and vegetables throughout the day. What does this do? It keeps us within an acceptable range of caloric balance.

Hit the salad bar first. Fill your stomach with fiber first to create satiety, followed by lean protein. That way, you’re going to be full with “healthier food choices.” And before you can binge on sweets and carbs, there will be less space in your stomach.

Snack before a party. This pretty much echoes the previous point but snacking before any party decreases the chances of you putting in any unplanned calories. Snacking creates control, and self-control creates willpower to say no to unnecessary food.

Walk the mall. Oh yeah, this will make the wives happy. Shopping can be a form of exercise. Place a pedometer on and do your shopping. The mall can be a good venue for exercise; window shopping can actually burn calories provided you walk from one point to another often enough.

Stay fit this season so you can start the year better and harder.
