Defending men’s champion USJ-R stays on top of Cesafi beach volley with clean 4-0 slate

UNIVERSITY of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) maintained its grip on the top spot of the Men’s division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) beach volleyball tournament after picking up its fourth straight win yesterday at the beach volleyball court of the Southweste­rn University (SWU).

The Jaguars pair of Alastair Gairanod and Kent Jay Verbosidad outclassed University of Cebu’s (UC) duo of Clyde Gocotano and Jason Art Sungahig in two sets, 21-17, 21-14.

Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) split its games yesterday with a win over UC and a loss to University of Southern Philippine­s Foundation (USPF).

CIT beat UC, 21-19, 21-18, but lost to USPF, 18-21 and 14-21.

With the win, USJ-R still remains at the top with a perfect 4-0 slate. University of the Visayas (UV) is closely trailing with a 3-1 record, followed by SWU and USPF with identical 2-2 records.

Girls division

SWU kept its perfect slate in the Girls division with a win over USJ-R.

SWU defeated USJ-R, 21-18 and 21-19.

University of San Carlos (USC) and USPF also held their ground with wins.

USC walked away with a three-set victory over UC, 2114, 15-21, 15-11. USPF won against Sacred Heart SchoolAten­eo de Cebu (SHS-AdC), 21-15 and 21-12.

SWU is at the top with a perfect 4-0 record, followed by USC at second with 4-1 and USPF, USPF at third with 3-1 and USJR at fourth with 1-2.

Boys division

In the boys side, USC surged to the top of the standings after logging three wins yesterday.

USC beat Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC), 21-16, 21-14; defeated UC, 12-21, 2115 and 16-14; and trampled on SHS-AdC, 21-11, 21-16.

Boys division leader USPF maintained its position with a win, while USJ-R closed in with back-to-back wins.

USPF squeaked past USJR, 21-13, 21-23, 18-16. USJ-R later on beat SHS-AdC, 26-24, 21-19; and SWU, 19-21, 21-17 and 15-9.

SWU also got a win after beating surging USC, 21-15, 21-1, while DBTC didn’t break a sweat to capture its first win of the tournament, a default victory over Cebu Eastern College (CEC).

USPF and USC are both at the pinnacle of the division with identical 4-1 slates. USJ-R is at third with 4-2, followed by UC with 3-2.
