6 finalists for ‘daygon’ contest announced

- SAM COSTANILLA

I’m glad to know that everything is all set for the Pasko sa Sugbo Original Daygon Songwriting Contest organized and produced by Team Martin Production in cooperation with Soundtraxx Production Studio headed by Gani and Gloria Villarojo. The Martins of Pardo, Cebu City should be lauded for this initiative, particularly Dennis, the songwriter of the family. For the record, he has been a consistent winner in the yearly Cebu Popular Music Festival, so I wasn’t surprised when he told me that he and his family are producing this competition. “We simply want to add more spirit and color to the yuletide season by holding this daygon contest,” Dennis stressed.

FINALISTS. After a thorough evaluation of several entries, a special board of screeners picked the top six daygons. Only one of them will be declared as the major winner, meaning there are no runners-up. The six entry titles and their composers are: Pasko Na by Joseph Barulo,

Ate ug Kuya, Mamasko Ra Mi by Hardie Bigcas, Manaygon Ta by Jay-arr Jeo Librando, Huni sa Kalipay by Frenyx Tarongoy and Andro Banate,

Natawo Na by Eugene Tan and Pasko Na Karon by Jade Castro. Best of luck to you, guys!

PRIZES. Dennis also told me that Team Martin Production has allocated P30,000 for the grand champion while the five non-winners will each receive P7,500. But I am sure that the finalists do not mind the amount; it is only secondary to them. What is important is that they are now part of a historic musical competition in Cebu. Add to this is the prize of P5,000 for the best choir presentation. So come Dec. 30, at 3 p.m., be there at SM Seaside City (Mountain Wing) for this exciting event that is open to the public.

GLOBAL. Talking of competitions, the staff and employees of Cebu Catholic Television Network (CCTN) Channel 47 are going global on Sunday, Dec. 18, when they hold their annual Christmas party. They will be divided into several groups representing various countries with matching colorful costumes as well as dances that best identify the places that they represent. Station manager Malou Inocando-Tabar and this writer will emcee the half-day merriment.

SHOW. Also on the same date, The Freeman sports columnist Raffy Uytiepo a.k.a. Elvisaya (Elvis Presley of the Visayas), Jun Villahermosa a.k.a. Frank Sinatra of Cebu and yours truly will have a Christmas show at Robinson’s Fuente. It is open to the general public.

CHEERS. I should congratulate Fr. Jonas Mejares, OSA, parish priest of the Sto. Niño parish in Mohon, Talisay City on the 26th anniversary of his priesthood.

PRESSCON. I have it from my very good friend Josie S. Pereyra, the movie promotion queen of Cebu, that Vice Ganda and three other stars of Super Parental Guardians will meet with the members of the local entertainment media. JSP, thank you for the invitation. I will definitely be there during the press conference.
